I purchased a set of Oneida kitchen knives but read up on the basic care for all stainless steel. Stainless is not stain proof and depending on any combination of factors can become pitted or stained. The most consistent advice for keeping cutlery from degrading is to HAND WASH in mild detergent and dry immediately after use. A simple online search will lead to lists of destructive agents (for example, kitchen salt) in which cutlery should not be allowed to sit for extended periods of time. Dishwashers and dishwasher cleaning agents can be very destructive. I have other "expensive" knives and always clean them immediately to avoid damage. I love my new knives and plan to enjoy them along with my professional knives for a long time!

We have owned this set of steak knives for two weeks, and tonight one emerged from our dishwasher with rust stains. Cannot recommend.
